St. Pölten, 24.04.2025 - The tecnet accent Innovation Award of the University for Continuing Education Krems was presented for the fifth time. This year's award ceremony took place in the Millennium Hall in St. Pölten. The winning projects impressively demonstrate how scientific excellence and innovative applications can go hand in hand - with a focus on the fields of medical technology, AI and sensor development.

The prize, awarded by tecnet equity, the accent Incubator and the University for Continuing Education Krems, recognizes outstanding scientific work with commercial potential and promotes entrepreneurial thinking among young researchers. However, it is aimed at all scientific institutions on Campus Krems. The award winners are correspondingly diverse - they come from a wide range of institutions and subject areas, reflecting the interdisciplinary strength of the location.

The prizes were presented by Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, who emphasized the importance of the award for the development of Lower Austria as a science location.

The University of Continuing Education Krems also sees the award as a valuable bridge between research and application. “With our research, we make innovative contributions to solving current and future social challenges,” emphasizes Viktoria Weber, Vice Rector for Research and Sustainable Development at the University of Continuing Education Krems. “The Innovation Award not only makes these results visible and helps to put our research into practice, but is also a special recognition of the commitment of young, up-and-coming researchers.”

The award shows how closely scientific training and commercial implementation can be interlinked - a goal that is also at the heart of the “Science to Business” spin-off initiative.

“Our aim is to encourage young scientists to consider the commercial exploitation of their research at an early stage and to recognize the possibilities of founding a company,” explains Doris Agneter, tecnet equity Managing Director.

"The award-winning projects show how much innovative strength there is in research at Campus Krems. We are delighted to be able to support this development with our expertise in startup funding," adds Michael Moll, Managing Director of accent Incubator.

Winning project 2025: AI in medical diagnostics

First prize went to Kenneth Chen from the University of Continuing Education Krems. He is developing an AI-based method for the automated detection of leg axis deviations on conventional knee X-ray images. These deviations are a key risk factor for knee osteoarthritis, but have often been overlooked to date as standardized whole-leg images are not always available. The new system should enable more precise diagnostics in future - without additional imaging effort.

Two second places went to innovative projects from the fields of sensor technology and biotechnology:

Juan A. Allegretto (Danube Private University) impressed with a novel platform for the precise detection of odorous substances. The optical sensors could be used in the future for food control, environmental monitoring or medical diagnostics.

Adrian Lendvai (IMC Krems) is working with an interdisciplinary team to research a peptide that promotes bone growth and accelerates the integration of implants - with potential applications in dentistry and orthopaedics.

The tecnet accent Innovation Award was established in 2009 and has been presented regularly since 2017. A total of around 100 young scientists have been honored to date. The aim is to raise awareness of economic implementation opportunities in research and thus provide new impetus for the establishment of innovative companies in Lower Austria.
